AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State's track and field team splits its squad this weekend, as the distance runners travel to the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., and the balance of the roster heads to Springfield, Mo., for the MSU Big Bear Invitational.
Four-time All-American Lisa Koll will be competing Friday at the Stanford Invitational in the 10,000-meter run, an event in which she took the title at the 2007 Big 12 championship. Cyclone Grace Kemmey will also be competing in the event. Kemmey took second in the 5,000-meter run during at the 2008 Big 12 Indoor Championship.
Promising men's newcomer Hillary Bor is slated to run the 5,000-meter race and Guor Majak will compete in the 10,000-meter run. Majak placed third in the event at last year's conference outdoor championship. Other competitors include Kiel Uhl, Jayden Russ, Dan Fagden and Kevin Born.
At the Plaster Sports Complex in Springfield, Mo., the Cyclones will go head-to-head with competition in both field and running events.
Freshman Tiffanie Synacek will be competing in the high jump. Synacek boasts a best jump of 5-08.75. Sophmore Jenna Caffrey will be making her comeback in the 100-meter hurdles after missing the indoor season with an injury. Last year, Caffrey clocked a personal-best time of 13.59 in the 100-meter hurdles, earning her fifth place at the 2007 Midwest Regional.
ISU standout Lashawn Wright will run the 100-meter dash, while teammate Molly Lohry tries for a repeat performance in the 800-meter run. Lohry took second in the race last weekend at the Missouri Relays.
In men's competition, junior Derron Montgomery will try his hand at the 200-meter dash and will likely run a leg on the 4x400-meter relay team along with ISU 800-meter indoor record-holder James Galvan.
“We're looking forward to going down to Missouri State because there is supposed to be good weather,” said sprints coach Ronnie Williams. “We ran into some inclement weather last week so we're looking to go down there and performing and getting some good marks and moving forward from there.”
The Stanford Invitational kicks off at 10:45 CDT Friday with section 5 of the women's 5,000-meter run and the MSU Big Bear Invitational is scheduled to be under way at 2 p.m. CDT Saturday with the men's hammer throw.
