NORWALK, Calif.- The Iowa State Cyclones wrapped up their long weekend on Saturday with strong performances, including one victory in the men's shot put at the Long Beach State Invitational at Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif.
Freshman Luke Pinkelman threw a 55-11 1/4 to capture his second victory in the shot put this outdoor season at the meet. The Cozad, Neb. native is already regionally qualified in the event, after tossing a 57-07 3/4 at the Missouri Relays. Pinkelman followed up his win with a fourth-place effort of 55-09 3/4 in the shot put at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif.
The Cyclones achieved another strong competition in the 1,500-meter run. Brandon Rooney, running unattached, ran a 3:48.77 at the Long Beach Invitational. The sophomore ran a personal-best in his first outing of the outdoor season, and placed third in the event. Teammate Jayden Russ finished right behind Rooney, with a time of 3:49.85. Russ regionally qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday, along with fellow Cyclone Hillary Bor.
In the women's 800-meter run, Erin Penticoff earned another career-best for the cyclones, with a time of 2:13.57. The sophomore placed fourth overall in the event. Morgan Bonds of Kansas State won the 800-meters with a time of 2:09.66.
Over the long weekend ISU competed in six meets, and regionally qualified several athletes. Kiel Uhl in the men's 5,000-meter run, Bor and Russ in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Britta Christofferson in the women's shot put, all regionally qualified.
The Cyclones hope to carry last week's strong showings into this weekend's 99th-annual Drake Relays. The Relays will take place from Thursday through Saturday, with the distance carnival scheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday.
