Big Bear Invitational

04.05.2008 | Track and Field
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. ? Freshman Iowa State runner Brek Minarik was the first Cyclone to compete in the Big Bear Invitational Saturday. He won the men's 1500-meter run with a time of 4:04.05 ? the Cyclones did not look back.
ISU had eight runners take first place in their respective events, in an overall dominating team performance.
In the fifth event of the day, it was Eric Parker who built on Minarik's success, as he won the men's 110-meter hurdles in 15.00.
Freshman Clayton Carper also began the outdoor season strong. His 8:44.21 was enough to edge out teammates Josh Lewis and Daniel Murray, and win the 3,000-meter run.
The men's team also contributed a great group effort, finishing first and second in the 4x400-meter relay, with times of 3:14.64 and 3:17.35.
On the women's side, Tiffanie Synacek took first in the high jump with a leap of 5-6.
Sophomore Jenna Caffery also posted a first-place finish, with a 14.49 effort in the 100-meter hurdles.
Lashawn Wright also netted a win for the Cyclones, with a 11.93 clocking in the 100-meter dash.
In the 800-meter run, Iowa State's Erin Penticoff and Ines Fischer posted a 1-2 finish, with times of 2:16.71 and 2:17.74, respectively.
“I thought that we had an overall strong performance today,” Iowa State sprints and hurdles coach Ronnie Williams said. “We had better weather today, and had some athletes compete very well. Competing under different circumstances this early in the outdoor campaign, and competing well, should help us as the campaign progresses.”
