AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State men's and women's track and field squad is splitting once again, traveling to Tempe, Ariz. for the Sun Angel Invitational and Des Moines for the Jim Duncan Invitational. The team achieved eight first-place finishes at last week's Big Bear Invitational in Springfield, Mo.
Sophomore Jenna Caffrey, looks to continue her outdoor campaign at the Sun Angel Stadium at Arizona State. Last week Caffrey made her outdoor debut placing first in the 100-meter hurdles. Sprinter Lashawn Wright will be competing in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes while freshman high jumper Tiffanie Synacek will attempt a repeat performance of her first place jump last weekend.
Eric Parker will try to beat out competition in the men's 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. Derron Montgomery looks for competition, as he will run the 400 and 200-meter dashes.
In Des Moines at the Drake Stadium, freshman standout Luke Pinkelman is set to compete in the shot put and discus. Pinkelman took first place in the shot put in his outdoor debut at the Missouri Relays. Teammate Stefan Tauber will throw javelin and compete in the long jump.
Clayton Carper, a freshman who impressed at last week's Big Bear Invitational by capturing first place in the 3,000-meter run, will compete in Des Moines. Cyclone Amy Waggoner will be competing in the shot put and hammer throw.
“Hopefully they'll have some great competition and great weather in Arizona,” said head coach Corey Ihmels. “On the flipside, everyone else will be traveling to the Jim Duncan Invitational where they can get a chance to compete at the facility which hosts the Drake Relays.”
The Sun Angel Invitational will start Saturday with women's discus at 1 p.m. CDT while the competition at Drake will begin Friday at 7:40 p.m. with the women's 5,000-meter run.
