AMES, Iowa- Iowa State's track and field squad heads to the Rocky Mountains this weekend for the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Friday to Sunday in Boulder, Colo. Head Coach Corey Ihmels expects strong performances from ISU's standouts as well as some pleasant surprises.
Iowa State's Lisa Koll looks to add to her impressive milestones in her record-breaking sophomore year. In her two outings this outdoor season, the Fort Dodge native set the American collegiate record in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:11.43 on April 4 at Stanford, and captured her first Drake Relay title on April 24 in the 5,000-meters. Koll is regionally qualified in both events.
“Lisa has been training very well,” said head track and field coach Corey Ihmels. “We are looking forward to the weekend. She has had some great performances at the Big 12 meets and she is looking forward to continuing that this coming weekend.”
Koll's teammate Grace Kemmey also is regionally qualified in the 5,000-meter run and will compete in the race in Boulder. Kemmey, a transfer from Vanguard (Calif.) University, placed fourth in the 5k at the Drake Relays and looks to score for the Cyclones.
Two freshmen for the women's squad hope to continue their notable rookie outdoor campaigns. Britta Christofferson tossed a 47-09 3/4 bomb in the shot put at the Mt. Sac Relays for her first collegiate victory. The mark also regionally qualified her in the event. Tiffanie Synacek cleared the regional-qualifying height of 5-08 3/4 last weekend in the high jump. The Council Bluffs native flirted with the height all season, before capturing the mark at the Nebraska Invitational. Synacek won the event for her first outdoor victory in the high jump.
The men's team, which has qualified seven athletes in nine events regionally, has worked to post its peak performance at this weekend's conference meet. ISU's rapidly improving performances affirm Ihmels' strategy.
James Galvan highlights the men's squad. The transfer from Mesa Community College in Arizona earned second place in the 800-meter run at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in February. The junior ran his outdoor best of 1:48.11 two weeks ago at the Arkansas Twilight.
The men's distance squad should provide some excitement with three top competitors. Freshman Hillary Bor has posted several stellar performances in his first year. The Kenyan finished third in the Drake Relays' 1,500-meter run, and attained the bronze in the mile run at the indoor conference meet. Kiel Uhl and Jayden Russ will also compete this weekend and look to score for ISU. Uhl is regionally qualified in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs, while Russ is qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
“The young men we are bringing this weekend are poised and ready to go,” Ihmels said. “This is something we point to all year long, and I am looking forward to some good things happening.”
Other men's athletes who hope to breakout in Boulder include throwers Luke Pinkelman and Zac Brouillette. Pinkelman regionally qualified in the shot put in his freshman season, with a throw of 58-06 3/4, and Brouillette's best throw of 55-05 in the shot put also qualifies regionally.
The Cyclones will have to adjust to the altitude of the Rocky Mountains. Boulder sits at 5,430 feet, above a mile high.
“This is going to be a different Big 12 meet than what we are used to with it being at altitude,” Ihmels said. “We are going to have to be patient, especially with the distance runners, and be prepared for anything to happen. I don't think this is going to go to form because of the altitude.”
Iowa State events will begin on Friday night with the 10,000-meter runs at 8 p.m. CDT.
