DES MOINES, Iowa- Iowa State freshman Hillary Bor proved he was one of the best in the nation Friday at Drake Stadium, finishing fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and earning All-American honors at the NCAA Track and Field Championships.
When the gun sounded Bor stayed with the pack keeping contact with Florida State's Luke Gun who paced the first 2,000-meters of the race. With 800-meters to go, Bor separated himself and made his move toward the top. The Kenyan cleared the final hurdle, worked his way into fourth place to finish the race with a time of 8:36.84. His effort shattered his previous career best by nearly seven seconds. Bor's time also placed him among the top five steeplechasers in school history.
“I was feeling good the entire race,” said Bor. “I felt the pace of the race was slow in the beginning but it picked up. I had a good push on my last lap and was able to move up. I am only a freshman and to make it here to national is a great accomplishment. I am proud of myself.”
“It was tremendous job from Hillary today,” said head coach Corey Ihmels. “To come in as only a freshman and compete at such a high level is an accomplishment in itself. I think Hillary will just keep getting better and better as time goes by.”
Bor's race capped off Iowa State's 2007-08 campaign and Ihmels first season as head coach. The team made major strides this season as records fell and many goals were reached, getting Ihmels and his staff excited about the future.
“Being that it was a transition year, it was a little tougher,” said Ihmels. “We took a lot of steps in the right direction this season. Each week we came together as a team and I am excited about where this program is at and where it is going. I think we have a bright future.”
