AMES, Iowa?In what head coach Wendy Dillinger referred to as a must-win game, the Iowa State soccer team delivered a 1-0 senior day victory over Texas Sunday afternoon at the ISU Soccer Complex.
The win keeps the Cyclones in the hunt for the eight-team Big 12 Championship that starts Nov. 4 in San Antonio, Texas. The triumph was also Iowa State's second in program history in the Cyclones' 17 matches with the Longhorns. Iowa State (7-6-4; 2-5-0 Big 12) edged Texas (7-7-2; 1-3-0 Big 12) for its first victory over the Longhorns since 1999.
Freshman Jordan Wagner scored the difference maker for the Cyclones at the 26:43 mark. Wagner got behind the Longhorn defense and fired in the goal from an acute angle from the left side. It was Wagner's second goal of the campaign. Junior Jordan Bishop dished out the assist on the goal.
“We were in a must-win situation and the girls knew it coming into the game,” Dillinger said. “We did a great job in the first half and we were doing what we needed to do. Jordan Wagner scored a great goal and we were good defensively the whole game.”
Iowa State had a quality opportunity to double its lead in the 77th minute when senior Elise Reid fed fellow senior Casey Bothwell who made a dangerous run behind the Longhorn defense. Bothwell's first touch failed her and Longhorn goalkeeper Alexa Paul thwarted any additional Bothwell scoring thoughts.
Texas nearly leveled the match with 2:10 remaining when Sophie Campise was one-on-one with Cyclone senior goalkeeper Ann Gleason. Gleason came off her goal line aggressively and denied Campise's potential game-tying effort.
For the match, Texas held an 11-8 shots edge and a slim 4-3 corner kick advantage.
Gleason made five saves for the Cyclones and recorded her fifth shutout of the campaign. The Stillwater, Minn. saw her record improve to 7-6-4 on the season.
Dillinger was happy to have the Cyclone seniors see their final match at the ISU Soccer Complex end with a victory.
“It's great to see them get a win in this game,” Dillinger said. “They have played through a lot and deserved this feeling.”
Iowa State looks to continue its efforts to earn a berth in the Big 12 Championship when the Cyclones travel to Missouri Oct. 23 for a 6:30 p.m. match.
