AMES, Iowa? What a difference a year makes. The Iowa State soccer team downed Oklahoma State 2-1 Friday evening at the ISU Soccer Complex, avenging a 7-0 defeat in 2008 at the hands of the Cowgirls.
Playing in difficult weather conditions, Iowa State (5-3-4; 1-2 Big 12) capitalized on a pair of goals off set pieces against Oklahoma State (7-5; 1-3 Big 12). Freshman Amanda Woelfel scored the game-winning goal for the Cyclones at the 51:00 mark off a free kick from the left side that she fired into the far-corner of the net.
Wendy Dillinger said the victory does more than just give the Cyclones another tally in the wins column. Additionally the second-year head coach was satisfied with her squad scoring on free kicks, which the Cyclones have worked on extensively in recent training sessions.
“It was really important coming off a tough road trip to get a win,” Dillinger said. “We worked on free kicks all week. We felt that if we could get the ball in the box that we could score with the size we have on the field. We got great services all night and every ball was dangerous off free kicks.”
With the victory, the Cyclones equaled their 2008 wins total and bests last season's point total in league action. Furthermore, it leaves Oklahoma State winless at the ISU Soccer Complex since 1996.
The Cyclones started the scoring in the 12th minute when sophomore Mary Kate McLaughlin bundled the ball into the goal after a long free kick from Lauren Fader.
Oklahoma State tried in vain to equalize, but Cyclone goalkeeper Ann Gleason made numerous stops to thwart the Cowgirl attack. Despite Gleason's quality interventions, Oklahoma State tied the contest at the 31:18 mark, when Kasey Langdon blasted a shot from 10 yards into the upper corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
The 1-1 score held going into the break. The Cyclones carried an 8-7 shots edge in the first half, while OSU had a 4-3 corner kick advantage.
After Woelfel's goal six minutes after the intermission, the Cyclones held defensively as the Cowgirls fired 12 second-half shots to Iowa State's five.
For the match, Oklahoma State had a 19-13 shot advantage and a 7-4 corner kick edge.
Gleason, who played the entire 90 minutes for the Cyclones, made five saves, most of which reinforced her Preseason All-Big 12 accolades. Gleason's season record now stands at 5-3-4.
Dillinger was full of praise for Gleason after the match.
“(Gleason) is one of the best goalkeepers around,” Dillinger said. “She has a great understanding of the game and does so much more than just make saves. She directs our backs, communicates well and is our anchor back there.”
Iowa State returns Sunday at 1 p.m. to face Northern Iowa at the ISU Soccer Complex.
