LAWRENCE, Kan.?The Iowa State soccer team fell to Big 12 Conference foe Kansas 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex after KU converted a second-half penalty kick.
The match proved to be the 15th occasion the Cyclones held their opponent to one goal or less on the campaign.
“Our defense and (goalkeeper) Ann Gleason played really well,” Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “Overall, we were average today and didn't work as hard as Kansas.”
A penalty-kick goal by Monica Dolinksy at the 53:40 mark was the difference maker, as Kansas moved to 11-7-1/3-6-0 Big 12 and Iowa State dropped to 7-8-4/2-7-0 Big 12.
After a scoreless first half where Kansas outshot the Cyclones 13-3 and held a slight 2-1 corner kick edge, the Jayhawks found the back of the net 8:40 into the second half on Dolinsky's fifth goal of the season. The Cyclones battled valiantly to level the affair with a pair of second-half shots on goal.
“We had a couple of good chances to score on counter attacks, but it wasn't enough today,” Dillinger said.
For the match, Kansas had a 25-7 shots advantage and had nine shots on goal to Iowa State's three.
Cyclone Freshman Amanda Woelfel fired a team-high three shots, with one being on target.
Gleason registered eight saves for the match. The Stillwater, Minn., native played the entire 90 minutes and saw her record for the season move to 7-8-4.
Iowa State concludes its 2009 campaign Friday when the Cyclone travel to Lincoln, Neb. for a 4 p.m. matchup.
