LAWRENCE, Kan. ? Reka Kelemen won a championship match, while a pair of her teammates won consolation brackets on the final day of the Jayhawk Invitational Sunday morning.
Kelemen put together a heroic effort against Kansas State's Carmen Borau Ramos. After dropping the first set 6-0, she fought back valiantly, winning the second set 6-1 and a tiebreaker 10-5.
“Reka started out slow in the first set and couldn't put a ball in the court,” ISU head coach Armando Espinosa said. “After the first set she really got a hold of the ball. She played a lot of long points and made a lot of balls. Reka ran everything down and she took control of match. She had a great tournament.”
Freshman Jenna Langhorst won her consolation bracket with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over New Mexico's Anya Villanueva, while Liza Wischer also claimed her consolation bracket with a win over Arkansas State's Maria Aleman 6-2, 6-1.
Marie Chartier fell in her bid for a title, dropping a hard fought singles match to Missouri's Danielle Day, despite winning the second set in a tie breaker (6-1, 6-7 (6), 13-11).
“Marie's match was very good,” Espinosa said. “Her opponent played well. Marie was flustered to begin with, but she came back and fought. She had three match points, but just couldn't finish it. It was very similar to her match against Missouri last year. The tennis she played overall this weekend was very good.”
Maria Macedo and Tessa Lang finished the weekend going undefeated in doubles action. Sunday the duo knocked off Abilene Christian's team of Carver and Hudson, 8-2. Macedo and Lang only gave up four games in three matches combined for the tournament. Chartier and Jasmine Lee also earned a doubles win over New Mexico's pair of Oldani and Shipperd (8-6). Langhorst and Kelemen picked up a doubles win over Missouri's Lewis and Modesto in a tiebreaker (9-8).
“Overall, we did great in doubles this weekend, which is what we have been working on,” Espinosa said. “We were way ahead in terms of wins (11-4 for the tournament in doubles). Tessa and Maria played well again, only giving up two games. Erin Karonis wasn't here, so that put a dent in one team, but we are certainly getting closer to having our doubles teams set. This gives us a good idea of where we are.”
