AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving team defended its Beyer Pool home Friday night, collecting wins in 10 of the 16 events for a 167-133 victory over in-state rival Iowa.
“Everybody came through,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. “From our top kids, to the kids fighting for fourth and fifth places, it was a lot of fun tonight.”
The Cyclones started off the meet with a bang as the 200 medley relay team of Nan Liu, Jeli Nixt, Abby Glaser and Lindsey Behrens took the race by two seconds and set a new Beyer Pool record in the process. In the next event, the 1000 freestyle, Jenny Vondenkamp came from third place for the second week in a row to secure the victory in the event.
Liu was not done with her pool record setting day as she repeated the effort in the 100 backstroke, breaking her own pool record in a time of 54.21. Liu later earned her third victory with a win in the 200 backstroke.
“Nan told us before the meet that she was going to step up and race fast,” Sorenson said. “She is a woman of her word.”
A clutch 23.44 50 free by Glaser gave the Cyclones the lead going into the first diving break with ISU leading 71-60. Tien Tran continued the Cyclone momentum posting a new career-best and the second-best score in school history with her score of 301.34. Abby Christensen finished second with a 260.85.
“Tien did a great job,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “She was ready to go for this exciting meet. She was very steady on 1-meter, almost getting the school record. We couldn't have asked for better.”
Dani Harris earned the Cyclones a crucial victory in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:21.04. Glaser collected her third victory of the evening in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.75 to give ISU a 134-111 lead going into 3-meter diving. On 3-meter, it was Tran again picking up the win and Christensen finishing third.
“Abby (Christensen) had a great meet overall,” Warrick said. “That was the best she has looked on 1-meter and she also put up a great score on 3-meter.”
Sorenson was proud of the timely victories provided by Glaser.
“This is her last Iowa State-Iowa meet and she wanted to leave with a bang,” Sorenson said. “We wanted her to step up in the races right before the break. She looked really good in practice and we knew she was ready to have a big meet.”
That gave Iowa State a 10-7 lead in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series with the men's basketball game still in progress.
“We are also happy that we were able to do our part for the series,” Sorenson said.
The Cyclones are finished with competition for the calendar year. The swimmers will embark on their annual winter training trip to Fort Lauderdale to start 2010 while the divers will compete in the Georgia Diving Invitational January 3-5. ISU's next dual meet is Jan. 23 when the Cyclones host Missouri.
