Brouilette Earns Provisional Mark

AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State's Zac Brouilette highlighted the Cyclone effort on the second day of the ISU Classic Friday. The senior put up an NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 64-10.50, a mark good enough for a fifth-place finish.

“I've been right around that same distance all season,” senior Zac Brouilette said. “I came out and kind of took it easy, just trying to get a mark and calm myself down. I'm starting to learn as I get better that it takes a different type of intensity to be good, and slowly but surely every meet I'm figuring out more of what I need to do.”

ISU junior Alex Whitesell finished fifth in the 3,000-meter run. The Rapid City, S.D. native fought with Indiana State's Eric Shultz for the lead after the sixth lap, however Drake's Colin Hagan went on to clinch first place with a time of 8:34.34.

“Alex has had some small injuries in the last two or three months,” head coach Corey Ihmels said. “He's battled back and obviously to come out tonight and run as well as he did, it really sets him up for the rest of the season.

In the women's weight throw, Cyclone freshman Laishema Hampton finished 10th (55-02.00) and senior teammate Amy Waggoner finished 15^th (53-07.75).

“We've got some kids going (tomorrow) that have the potential to take (provisional) or even get close to the automatic NCAA bid,” Ihmels said. “It's a good tune up for us for Big 12's in two weeks and hopefully we get some great performances.”

Events begin Saturday with the non-seeded one mile run at 9:30 a.m. featuring Kristen Peterson and Kayla Borowski of Iowa State. Results will be live on cyclones.com.
