IRVING, Texas - Iowa State's David Zabriskie earned his second Big 12 Wrestler of the Week honor for competition from Feb. 9-16, the conference office announced Monday. The junior is the first ISU heavyweight to win weekly honors twice in a season, and first Cyclone since 1997-98 (Dwight Hinson, 126-pounds).
No. 2 Zabriskie knocked off the nation's top-ranked heavyweight wrestler for the second time this season, this time edging Missouri's Mark Ellis, 2-1 (TB1). The junior went head-to-head with Ellis through three periods, and was able to edge the MU heavyweight in the second-half tiebreaker as he kicked free of Ellis's grasp at the 0:10 mark to secure the victory. The Branchville, N.J.-native is 7-1 this season in overtime matches, as he advanced his record to 26-2 overall and 14-1 in dual competition.
The Cyclone squad has surpassed its season high for the most individual Big 12 Wrestler of the Week honors in a season. The current total of four betters the three earned in the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons.
