“Our beam was very close to our best, and if it wasn't for Nebraska's season-high performance on floor, we could have sealed the meet,” said ISU head coach Jay Ronayne.
In only her fourth career all-around performance, junior Jody McKellar won the all-around title with a score of 39.050.
“It was easily the most consistent meet that I have seen from Jody in her collegiate career,” said Ronayne. “She's choosing a great time to be peaking.”
The Cyclones equaled their season-high score on bars to start the meet with a 49.000. ISU was led by four gymnasts who scored a 9.800 or higher. They were McKellar (9.800), Ceilia Maccani (9.800), Nikki Dilbert (9.825) and Jasmine Thompson (9.825). Dilbert's tally was her season high. However, the Cornhuskers were up to the task and inched past ISU with a 49.150 on vault. After one rotation, Nebraska led 49.150-49.000.
The second rotation pitted Iowa State on vault and Nebraska on bars. The Cyclones scored a 48.775, led by McKellar's career-high-tying 9.800. Jennifer Salfen and Maccani chipped in with 9.775s. Nebraska continued its strong meet, scoring a 49.075 on bars. At the midway point, the Cornhuskers held a 98.225-97.775 advantage.
A stellar floor effort from the Cyclones in the third rotation pushed Iowa State into the lead. Michelle Browning led ISU with a career-high-tying 9.900. Katie Sweetin matched her season high with a 9.850 and Thompson notched a 9.825. The Cornhuskers had to count a fall on beam as they scored a 48.525, but senior Tricia Woo significantly helped their effort with a 9.950. Iowa State scored a 49.075 to give the Cyclones the 146.850-146.750 advantage.
On beam, Browning tallied her career high with a 9.850, while Ashley Kent tied her season best with a 9.800. Nebraska's floor performance was buoyed by its final three competitors, who scored 9.925, and a pair of 9.900s.
Iowa State heads back to Ames for its final regular-season home contest. The Cyclones will play host to No. 21 West Virginia Friday at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. The meet is also Senior Night and will honor the careers of Thompson and Salfen, the two graduating Cyclone seniors.
