AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State's track team will participate in three meets this weekend, including the 100th running of the Drake Relays in Des Moines at Drake Stadium on the Jim Duncan Track. Three Cyclones will travel to Berkeley, Calif., to run in the New York Roadrunners 10,000-meter events at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. A third group will compete in the Kip Janvrin Simpson College Open in Indianola, Iowa Friday.
The ISU men will field relay foursomes in the 4 x 1600-meter relay, the 4 x 800-meter relay and the distance medley. In addition, All-American Hillary Bor will compete in the 1500 meters Saturday. Cyclone James Galvin, a former Big 12 runner-up in the 800-meters, will run that race Saturday. Throwers Robbie Utterback (discus), Zac Brouillette and Zack Richards (hammer), Dan Newhouse (javelin) and Luke Pinkleman (shot put) are slated to compete at Drake.
The ISU women will field teams in the 4 x 800- and 4 x 1600-meter relays. In addition Burlington's Jenna Caffrey will compete in the 100-meter hurdles. Kansas Relays 400-meter hurdles champion Kianna Elahi will run that event this weekend. Council Bluffs high jumper Tiffanie Synacek and shot putters Britta Christofferson, Danielle Frere, Amy Waggoner and Laishema Hampton are slated to work at Drake.
“We have some relay teams that can compete well this weekend,” said Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels. "Hillary and James will be in quality fields and it is always a really exciting atmosphere at Drake. The crowd is so positive. The throws competitions will also be tough.”
Defending NCAA 10,000-meter champion Lisa Koll will open the outdoor season in the 10k in California. All-American Grace Kemmey will also run the 10,000. Cyclone All-American Guor Marial will compete in the men's 10,000. Both races will be run late Saturday night.
“Lisa was hurt for most of the indoor season and is just now getting back in racing shape,” Ihmels said. “We didn't have a lot of options of good 10,000-meter races during this time of the year. Guor pulled up during the 10,000 at Stanford so this will also be an important race for him as well.”
The meet at Simpson will start at 2 p.m. Friday.
