Iowa State Medley Teams Earn Championships

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women's distance medley relay 'A' team's meet record time of 11 minutes 47.60 seconds highlighted competition for the Cyclones at the ISU Open Friday at the Lied Recreation Center. Seniors Erin Penticoff, Kaylee Small, and Lisa Koll and junior Molly Lohry made up the winning quartet.

The Iowa State men's distance medley relay 'A' team (Hillary Bor, Tim Jardine, Michael Alexander and Guor Marial) also finished first (9:56.44), while the Iowa State 'B' team (Brandon Rooney, Grant Jacobson, Elphas Sang and Yonas Mebrahtu) finished runner-up, a hundredth of a second behind the first place team (9:56.45).

Having been on the Iowa State campus for only three weeks, Cyclone junior Emily Nugent (unattached) earned first place in the weight throw, setting a personal record (54-09.25) by more than two feet. This was also Nugent's first title finish at any collegiate meet.

"I just told myself (in the finals) to take a deep breath and that I could do it," Nugent said. "Going into the finals Danielle (Frere) and Hayli (Bozarth) were there and I was like, 'ok you guys lets finish one, two and three,' and then it happened so it was really cool. It's really great having teammates pushing you to get better."

Competing unattached, ISU junior Josh Koglin finished runner-up in the men's weight throw (57-05). Junior Robbie Utterback finished eighth (52-03.75) while sophomore Mike Zika finished ninth (52-02).

Sophomore Danielle Frere finished runner-up in the weight throw (53-03). Competing unattached, Hayli Bozarth finished third (52-04.50), a personal record.

Competing unattached, Iowa State junior Jamaal Currica finished runner-up in the men's long jump (23-05.25). Sophomore Tony Johnson finished seventh (22-08), while junior Nick Pearson finished 10th (22-02.50).

Sophomore Caitlyn Weber finished third in the pole vault (10-11.75), while freshman Ashley Leitner finished eighth (10-00).

The ISU Open will resume tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the women's non-seeded 3,000-meter run. Results will be posted on cyclones.com.
