ISU Tennis Picks up Win Against UTEP

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-The Iowa State tennis team made the most of its first opportunity to play outdoors this season by earning a convincing 6-1 win over UTEP Friday, the team's first victory of the season. ISU improved to 1-1 after narrowly falling to Minnesota in the season opener.

"It's not only getting the first win of the season, but coming to play outdoors the way we did," Espinosa said. "I was happy with how we competed."

The Cyclones started off slow in doubles, but picked up wins in all three matched. Erin Karonis and Jenna Langhorst teamed up for an 8-5 win over UTEP's duo of Carolina DeLuca and Martina Trierweiler at the No. 1 slot. The other two Cyclones doubles pairs each earned wins with a score of 8-3.

"The condition of the court was slow and it forced our play to be slower," Espinosa said. "The girls responded really well against that and they were patient. We did a good job coming out."

In singles, the Cyclones picked up points at the top three singles positions. Karonis defeated Trierweiler in No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-4. In the No.2 slot, Maria Macedo picked up her first win of the spring season with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Tessa Lang pulled out a tight match in a tiebreaker, 6-5, 7-6 (7-1), against Carolina DeLuca in No. 3 singles.

Freshman Jenna Langhorst picked up her second win of the season and gave the Cyclones the win in No. 5 singles, swiftly defeating Alexandra Glebova 6-3, 6-1. Liza Wischer defeated Ximena Fuentes 6-4, 6-3 in No.6 singles.

"There were some matches that were close, but I feel like we really took care of business and showed a lot of confidence today," Espinosa said.

The Cyclones will face North Florida Sunday at 8 a.m. in Jacksonville.
