AMES, Iowa?The No. 14 Iowa State gymnastics team made a ferocious comeback effort on No. 17 Michigan in its final event, but the Cyclones had to settle for a split in the three-team competition. ISU defeated BYU 195.625-192.050 and fell to Michigan 196.000-195.625 Friday evening in Hilton Coliseum in front of 1,695 boisterous fans.
Iowa State (2-3) scored its highest total on any event this season, with a 49.175 on floor in its final event. Jody McKellar (9.825), Melanie Tham (9.800) and Celine Paulus (9.850) all set career highs on the event. Michelle Browning notched a team-best 9.875.
“Knowing that floor was our last event and we were down a lot meant we had to dig deep,” ISU head coach Jay Ronayne said. “We scored our highest on floor this season which is really exciting for the future.”
The Cyclones started on vault, scoring a 48.875. Paulus led the ISU vault effort with a 9.825. Alex Grant chipped in with a career-best 9.800 and Browning scored a 9.775. Michigan (5-1) tallied a 48.825 on bars, while BYU (0-5) posted a 47.675 on beam, giving ISU the lead after the first event.
For their second event, the Cyclones scored a 48.700 on bars. Ashley Kent was Iowa State's top bars worker with a season-high 9.825 and McKellar added a 9.750. At the midway point, Iowa State led BYU 97.600-95.300 and trailed Michigan 97.875-97.600.
ISU posted a 48.850 on beam for its third event. Kent tallied a 9.825, while Browning registered a season-high 9.800. McKellar and Paulus each posted a 9.775. With one event remaining, ISU led BYU 146.450-143.900 and trailed Michigan 146.950-146.450.
Browning's effort earned her the “Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award” that goes to the Iowa State gymnast whose performance inspires and captivates the Cyclone coaches, teammates and fans.
In the all-around, Browning tallied a career-high 39.200 and McKellar tied her career best with a 39.100. Michigan's Kylee Botterman won the event with a 39.300.
The Cyclones return to action Feb. 5 when they travel to Pittsburgh, Penn., to face Pittsburgh, Rutgers and SUNY-Brockport. The competition is set to begin at 8 p.m.
