PITTSBURGH, Pa.?The No. 13 Iowa State gymnastics team was far from its best Friday night in the Fitzgerald Field House, and the Cyclones lost one of their top all-arounders halfway through the four-team competition, as ISU had to settle for a second-place finish with a score of 195.125. Meet host Pittsburgh (195.175) took first, while Rutgers (189.300) and SUNY-Brockport (188.350) rounded out the competition.
The Cyclones opened the meet a bit shaky on floor, scoring a 48.550. Celine Paulus led ISU with a 9.800, while Melanie Tham chipped in with a 9.775. Anna Robey tallied a 9.750. After the first event, Iowa State was in second behind Pittsburgh (48.925).
“There was some early adversity we caused ourselves from not being good on floor,” ISU head coach Jay Ronayne said. “We came back on our next event with a good vault. Unfortunately, Jody went down on that event and we had another set of circumstances to deal with. It rattled us a little bit and we can't let that happen.”
Iowa State (4-4) was much better on vault for its second rotation, scoring a season-high 49.000. Shea Anderson led the ISU vault team with a career-high 9.850, while Alex Grant also registered a career-high 9.825. Paulus and Michelle Browning each tallied 9.800. Unfortunately, Jody McKellar injured her ankle during the rotation, eliminating her from the remainder of the competition. At the midway point, ISU closed the gap on Pittsburgh (4-4), as the Panthers led 97.650-97.550.
Anderson took home the vault title at the meet.
The third rotation for Iowa State was similar to its first, as the Cyclones scored a 48.525. Jacquelyn Holmes posted a career-high 9.825. Ashley Kent (9.775) and Michelle Browning (9.750) also tallied solid scores. Pittsburgh extended its lead on the Cyclones with a solid beam performance. The Cyclones remained in second place behind Pittsburgh 146.250-146.075 with one event left.
Holmes was crowned champion of the meet on bars.
Iowa State was strong in its final event (beam), scoring a 49.050. Tham (9.825) and Ceilia Maccani (9.850) each scored career bests. Kent tied her season best with a 9.850. The Panthers were equally strong on floor, holding off ISU with a 48.925.
“Finishing on beam with a performance that we expect is something we can build off of,” Ronayne said. “It's two meets in a row that we've done well on our last event. However, we can't give away good scores at the beginning of the meet to put ourselves in that position.”
Kent and Maccani tied for the top honor on beam.
In the all-around, Browning took second with a 38.950 behind Pittsburgh's Alicia Talucci (39.200). Paulus made her debut on the event, scoring a 38.800.
The Cyclones return to Big 12 Conference action in their next competition when they travel to Norman, Okla., to face No. 2 Oklahoma. ISU will compete against the Sooners Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Lloyd Noble Center.
