AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State women's basketball team cruised to a 67-25 win over Lafayette College as the Cyclones won their 10th straight contest Sunday night at Hilton Coliseum. Chelsea Poppens led the way for Iowa State with her second career double-double and the Cyclone defense held the Leopards to the lowest scoring output by an ISU opponent in school history.
Poppens scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. Alison Lacey finished with 11 points, moving her into ninth place on the Iowa State career scoring chart, passing Tracy Gahan in the process. Lacey now has 1,362 points in her career. Lacey also contributed five rebounds, nine assists and was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Freshman Amanda Zimmerman also had a career night with highs in points (11) and rebounds (6). The Cyclones shot 42.6 percent from the field, but were just 3-for-11 from three-point range. ISU countered that statistic, however, by outscoring Lafayette 34-10 in the paint. ISU outrebounded Lafayette, 46-23.
“I thought we were solid tonight and our post players made some progress,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “Pops (Poppens) had a good game and Z (Zimmerman) contributed and it was good to get Anna (Prins) in the game. I'm happy to be 11-1 and we understand that we have one more to go before Big 12 play starts.”
Iowa State ran its winning streak to 10 straight and improved its overall record to 11-1 with the victory. Lafayette dropped to 2-12 this season. The Leopards were led by LaKeisha Wright's seven points.
The Cyclones took a 35-14 lead into the break, after shooting 41.4 percent from the field and holding the Leopards to 30.8 percent shooting. Iowa State also outrebounded the Leopards, 25-14, over the first 20 minutes.
Lafayette got out to a 5-0 start, but the Cyclones quickly responded with a 20-0 run, with scoring from five different players. Poppens hit field goals to open and close the run, while Lacey contributed seven points during the stretch.
The Leopards got a field goal from Wright before Iowa State went on another 12-0 spurt that included another six points from Poppens, as the Cyclones raced out to a 32-7 lead. The two teams traded points the rest of the way and Poppens finished the half with a double-double, including 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Lafayette scored first coming out of the break, but Iowa State once again had answers, scoring seven straight points to go ahead 42-16. The Leopards scored their final points with 9:40 to go in the game, and from there, the Cyclones finished out the game on a 19-0 run. Poppens had a stretch of eight straight points, including going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe, during ISU's final run.
Iowa State will close out the nonconference schedule Tuesday night when the Cyclones play host to South Dakota (5-5) at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. ISU will open Big 12 action at home against Nebraska at 7 p.m. Saturday.
