AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women claimed three individual championships, leading the team to a second-place finish at the Inaugural Bill Bergan Invitational. The Cyclone men took home two individual titles, leading the team to a third-place finish.
"Nobody was at full strength today but it is always nice to do well at a meet," head coach Corey Ihmels said. "We just wanted to put our athletes in an environment where place counted. We spend so much time chasing times that it was nice to have a meet where everyone was chasing the place. At the end of February it's going to be a totally different playing field, but it was just nice to have come good competition and some good teams."
The Iowa State women put up 16 personal records, while the men saw 12 personal bests.
Sophomore Laishema Hampton shattered her personal best to win the weight throw, bettering her mark by nearly a foot (60-10.75). Sophomore Danielle Frere finished third (58-09.50), while junior Britta Christofferson finished fourth (58-04.00), both setting personal bests.
"In practice now we focus on hitting our spots and focusing on technique," Hampton said. "We throw really hard in the beginning of the week and then cool off toward the end of the week to make sure our bodies are ready to go. It's great to see our entire team doing well, I'm very excited and expecting big things this year for this team."
Senior Brandon Rooney finished first in the mile (4:05.63), while Senior's Jory Zunich and Dan Fadgen finished fourth and sixth, respectively.
"I really am looking to just enjoy this season, this being my last year," Rooney said. "Conference is the main goal, and I really want to get to the finals. Last time we have indoors here I got fourth (in the mile) so I'm looking forward to competing at home. Practice has been really aggressive, and I think us seniors are really trying to get after it (this season)."
Sophomore Ian Warner finished first in the 60-meter dash (6.72), avenging his runner-up finish last week at the ISU Open. Warner's time was one-hundredth of a second off the provisional qualifying standard. Junior Amara Sama, a Des Moines East graduate, finished fifth (6.96), tying his personal best, while freshman Patrick Lewis, a Cedar Rapids Xavier graduate, finished sixth (6.99).
Seven-time All-American Lisa Koll finished first in the mile, hitting her provisional qualifying mark. The Fort Dodge native set a personal record by nearly seven seconds. All-American freshman Betsy Saina finished fourth (4:53.89).
