AMES, Iowa—A Texas goal with 5:16 remaining gave the Longhorns a 2-1 Big 12 Conference win over the Iowa State soccer team Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex in a match the Cyclones statistically controlled.
A pair of poorly defended free kicks would inevitably derail Iowa State (6-9-2/1-6 Big 12), as both of Texas' tallies were the result of set pieces.
“When we don't score when we have great chances and give up unforced fouls you can't win,” Iowa State had coach Wendy Dillinger said. “It's frustrating when our players who shouldn't be giving up free kicks do, and that's why we lost the game today.”
For the match, the Cyclones outshot the Longhorns 15-10 and also had a 6-1 corner-kick edge.
The Longhorns scored the opening goal in the 20th minute after Texas (10-3-3/3-2-2 Big 12) goalkeeper Alexa Gaul took a long free kick that Kylie Doniak headed into the path of Amanda Lisberger who found the back of the net.
Iowa State answered at the 41:42 mark when freshman Theresa Kucera took advantage of a poor clearance by Gaul. Kucera tallied her second goal of the season for the Cyclones. The match went into halftime knotted at 1-1.
After the Cyclones controlled much of the second half, the game appeared to be headed for overtime. However, the six-foot-tall Lucy Keith headed in a free kick from Doniak with just over five minutes remaining.
Iowa State's Amanda Cacciatore had a tremendous effort to level the match with 3:33 remaining that hit the post. Cacciatore volleyed the ball after Texas did not clear a Cyclone corner kick. Cacciatore also led the Cyclones in shots with three.
Cyclone goalkeeper Maddie Jobe played all 90 minutes and had six saves.
The Cyclones are on the road for the next match when they travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech Friday at 7:15 p.m.
