Iowa State Scores 1-0 Win at Baylor

WACO, Texas—A goal off the head of freshman midfielder Emily Goldstein 67:13 into Sunday's match at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field was all the Iowa State soccer team needed in a 1-0 victory over Baylor in Big 12 Conference action.

Goldstein's goal was her team-leading fifth of the season and her second game winner. The Orange County, Calif., native's goal continued the Cyclones' trend in Big 12 play this year where only freshman have scored for Iowa State. Goldstein also leads Iowa State (7-10-2/2-7 Big 12) in points this season with 12.

“Emily's a very talented, smart player,” Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “She's a very bright player on the field. She's constantly checked in and takes advantage of scoring opportunities.”

Fellow freshman Jennifer Dominguez provided the assist to Goldstein, her third of the year.

Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Jobe played all 90 minutes for the Cyclones and notched seven saves while earning the win. Jobe also registered her fourth shutout of the year, and the Cyclones' blanked their seventh opponent.

“We played hard the whole match,” Dillinger said. “The first 10 minutes we had them pinned in their end and had good chances. Then (Baylor) got the momentum for the latter part of the first half. We came out in the second half and made some adjustments that worked. We played tough defense all game and Maddie Jobe played tough in goal. She took a big hit late in the game on a good scoring chance for Baylor. Maddie definitely took one for the team.”

For the match, Baylor (10-7-2/3-6 Big 12) narrowly outshot Iowa State 13-11. The two teams both registered seven corner kicks apiece.

Despite a tough run of recent results Dillinger is still pleased with the way her young squad is battling and working.

“We haven't given up at all this season,” Dillinger said. “I think that is something we are establishing in our identity. We continue to fight and work hard. It's a good group who fights despite the fact we've had some results that we were disappointed with. I wouldn't trade any of them.”

Iowa State closes out its regular season with a home match Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Missouri at the ISU Soccer Complex. The match will also be Senior Night to honor the careers of Cyclone seniors Jordan Bishop and Ashley Costanzo.
