AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State track and field teams started the 2010-11 indoor season with a strong showing at the Holiday Preview Friday at the Lied Recreation Center, finishing the day with seven first-place finishes and 19 personal records. The Holiday Preview was the first of five home meets for the Cyclones this winter.
"As we move forward, the next three to four weeks is pretty imperative to us having a successful indoor season," Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said. "I think we've done a great job this fall of putting a lot of good work in and now we've got to carry that through the holiday break and be ready to go when we get back in January."
The women's throws group kicked off the meet as six Cyclones competed in the weight throw. Junior Laishema Hamton took first place (63-02) in the event for the second straight year with a personal best throw of nearly three feet. Hampton was followed by teammates Britta Christofferson (56-11.25), Danielle Frere (56-06.50) and Hayli Bozarth (53-11.25), who competed unattached.
"I think this is a building block for me," Hampton said. "We have a lot of bigger meets and more competition coming up I think it was a nice building block for the upcoming season. This year I am a lot more relaxed and I have a lot more experience."
The women's throwers continued to dominate the field as Frere, Bozarth (unattached), Hampton and Christofferson finished first through fourth, respectively, in the shot put.
The men's throws group also dominated the weight throw field of 26 competitors as redshirt senior Josh Koglin finished first in the event with a throw of 61-03.50. The men saw five of their eight competitors finish in the top ten, including Collin Fett and Mike Zika who competed unattached for the Cyclones.
"It's early in the season, but I think the throws group did a tremendous job," Ihmels said. "They came out and were aggressive from the start. I really liked how that group progressed through the day. They've been working extremely hard this fall so it's nice to have them get some rewards."
David Lantz began his senior indoor season by running to a first-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.13.
Competing unattached, freshman Brandon Barnes ran to a first-place title in his first race on the Harry Hoak Track, finishing in 4:22.80 in the mile run.
"We had a lot of kids that competed unattached that are new to the program that competed hard and had good performances," Ihmels said.
The women's group also dominated the high jump competition as freshman Karly Groon placed first while competing unattached, jumping five feet, six inches. Sophomore Alison Tedrow followed Groon placing second with a personal best jump of 5-06.
The 4x300-meter relay provided an exciting ending to the season opening meet for the Cyclones.
The unattached Iowa State 4x300-meter relay team of Christina Anderson, Jessica Nichols, Donnise Powell and Kianna Elahi took first place (2:41.86) after Elahi's impressive performance as the relay's anchor. The men's 4x300-meter relay team of Ian Warner, Bryce Colston, Amara Sama and Clint Martin also captured a first-place finish (2:17.18).
"I thought the sprints group looked real good in a bunch of different places, and the multi-event group looked good in their events as well," Ihmels said.
The Cyclones continue the 2010-11 indoor season as they play host to the ISU Open Jan. 21-22 at the Lied Recreation Center.
