AMES, Iowa - In the final game of the seventh-annual Cyclone Challenge, No. 19 Iowa State (10-2) held off a late run by Prairie View A&M to win, 58-50, on Thursday night at Hilton Coliseum. Forward Chelsea Poppens led the way for the Cyclones with her first double-double of the season, scoring 18 points and collecting 15 rebounds.
Cyclone Kelsey Bolte was named the Cyclone Challenge Tournament MVP after her career-high 28 points on Wednesday against Florida A&M. Bolte had eight points on 3-of-10 shooting on Thursday night. Poppens also was named to the tournament team.
Chassidy Cole opened the scoring for the Cyclones in the second half with her first three-point basket of the season and Iowa State appeared to be in total control of the game after taking a 36-20 lead into the half.
Prairie View had different ideas as Siarra Soliz hit two free throws to start the Panthers on a 24-8 run, allowing the visitors to draw within two of the home team, 49-47 with 6:19 left to play.
A jumper by Bolte put the Cyclones up 53-50 with 1:50 remaining. Off a turnover by Trinity Robinson, Bolte dished the ball under the basket to Poppens who scored the layup and drew the foul. Poppens made the free throw to build the Iowa State lead to six with 1:05 on the clock.
Two missed free throws by Lereahn Washington and staunch defense helped close out the win for the Cyclones in front of 7,552.
Freshman Hallie Christofferson added 12 points for the Cyclones on the night, her fourth-straight double-digit scoring performance and sixth on the year.
Prairie View's tournament team member Dominique Smith led the offense for the Lady Panthers with 23 points on the night, including scoring 14 of the Panthers' 20 points in the first half.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the first half with the Cyclones taking the 14-7 lead with 11:41 remaining before the half. Rebounding helped the Cyclones to the 36-20 halftime lead. Iowa State grabbed 23 boards, seven on the offensive glass, while the Panthers managed only 12 rebounds.
At the break, Smith led all scorers with 14 points followed by Christofferson who added 12.
The Cyclones have two games remaining in their six-game home streak. Chicago State is up next, coming to Hilton Coliseum on Sunday afternoon for a 2 p.m. tip.
