AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Lisa Koll had the 5,000-meter meet record in her sights. The Cyclone seven-time All-American and Big 12 champion raced to the fastest clocking in a Big 12 Championships to highlight Iowa State's first day at the league meet Friday at the Lied Center. Iowa State's men's distance medley closed out the night with a second-place finish after a four minute mile anchor by All-American Hilary Bor.
The Iowa State women are fourth after the first day with 26 points. Texas Tech leads the women's competition with 48 1/2 points. The Iowa State men are fifth after the first day with 17 points. Nebraska leads with 48 points. Both the ISU men's and women's teams qualified five runners for Saturday's finals. Heptathlon competition starts at 11 a.m. and field events begin at noon. Running events start at 1:30 p.m.
Koll had talked about bettering the meet mark of 15:58.86, which was run Colorado's Sara Gorton in 2003. Koll didn't totally put the hammer down as she must come back and run the 3,000-meter race Saturday. Beverly Ramos of Kansas State was second in the race with a 16:18.84 effort. Iowa State's Betsy Saina was third in 16:23.06.
"It feels great," Koll said. "I had talked to the coaches a little bit to get something out of my last Big 12 meet. I wanted to make something exciting and special about it without killing myself. I want to run a good (3,000-meters) tomorrow and have a good rest of the season. The meet record was a good goal for me to aim for this meet."
Iowa Stater Laishema Hampton bettered her 2009 indoor Big 12 finish in the weight throw Friday with a fourth-place finish (59-03.50). She earned five points for the women's team. Hampton finished seventh at last year's indoor conference meet. Sophomore Danielle Frere of Muscatine set a personal record in the weight throw (58-10.75), good enough for sixth place.
"Lisa Koll ran all by herself," Ihmels said. "She has one more race to run on this track and it will be fun to see what happens. The women did what we needed to do in the 5,000-meters. We did well in the weight throw and the distance medley got in there to score (7th)."
Qualifying for women's finals on Saturday were Burlington native Jenna Caffrey in the 60-meter hurdles, former Clinton prep Ines Fischer in the 1,000 meters and Cedar Rapids native Erin Penticoff in the 800 meters. Cyclone Kianna Elahi had the fastest qualifying time in the 600-yard run and Semehar Tesfaye moved on to the mile final.
"Hillary did a great job anchoring the DMR," Ihmels said. "We got some points in the weight throw and have three men in the mile final and two in the 1,000-meters. Both the women and the men have a lot of people running Saturday and that is what you want after the first day of the Big 12 meet."
The Iowa State men got points from newcomer Josh Koglin, who placed fifth in the weight throw.
