FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Lisa Koll says she is a different runner now, even compared to the Iowa State distance performer who lapped three All-Americans to win the 2008 NCAA 10,000-meter run at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. She affirmed her progression as a dominant runner Friday, running away from the field to win the 5,000-meters at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the Randal Tyson Track Complex. Koll finished in 15:39.65 and won by nearly 11 seconds over runner up Marie Louis Asselin of West Virginia, who crossed the finish line in 15:50.53.
"I have gotten stronger and I have more speed now," Koll said. "I ran my race tonight. I have started to think that I can make an impact at this distance, not just in the 10,000. After being out for much of last season, I went back to my base training and started working my way back. Each success I have had this season has made me more confident."
Though not immediately leaving the field behind, Koll started to pull away from her pursuers at about 1500 meters as no one else in the field was able to maintain her pace. Her family was in the stands chanting her name the entire race.
Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels was happy for his star pupil.
"Any time you win a national championship, it is a good race," Ihmels said. "Lisa is very competitive and thrives in these situations. Now we will get a night's rest and come back tomorrow in the 3,000 meters."
Koll, now a two-time NCAA champion and eight-time All-American and Big 12 champion, is a favorite in Saturday's 3,000 meters.
"I want to get some food and try to get some rest," Koll said. "It is not always easy sleeping after a race like this."
