AKRON, Ohio ? Iowa State's Nate Carr, Jr. reeled off four-straight wins to place eighth at 74 kg (163 pounds) at the ASICS University Nationals, hosted by the University of Akron in the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House, April 10-11. Four ISU squad members racked up 14 wins at the event, with Carr and Chris Spangler (79 kg/174 pounds) tying with five each.
Carr was turned away in quarterfinal action against Northwestern's Jason Welch by a score of 3-5, 2-0, 0-6. The Cyclone rebounded with a consolation victory over Shawn Bilodeau of Lehigh, 3-0, 4-4, 2-0, en route to placing eighth.
Spangler fell short of placing at 79 kg (174 pounds), but notched five wins in the event. Four of Spangler's victories came in the consolation side of the bracket after he suffered an early loss.
ISU's Max Mayfield (66 kg/145.5 pounds) and Cole Shafer (84 kg/185 pounds) each recorded two victories in the tournament.
