AMES, Iowa ? Several current and former Iowa State wrestlers will take part in the 2010 ASICS U.S. Open in Cleveland, Ohio, April 23-24. The Senior-level event showcases some of the top freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling talent in the nation. The top seven placewinners in each weight class will qualify for the 2010 World Team Trials in Council Bluffs, Iowa, June 11-12.
In the freestyle portion of the U.S. Open, a qualification bracket is contested before the final tournament takes place to determine each weight's winner.
Jake Varner, a two-time NCAA champion and four-time finalist at Iowa State, will look to defend his 96-kg (211.5-pound) U.S. Open title. Varner was a U.S. representative for the 2009 World Wrestling Championships in Herning, Denmark.
ISU heavyweight national champion David Zabriskie will wrestle in the 120-kg (264.5-pound) final bracket.
Twin brothers Travis and Trent Paulson, each three-time All-Americans for the Cyclones, will compete in the 74-kg (163-pound) weight division's final bracket. The duo were both champions in the event a year ago. Trent Paulson was a World Team member at 66 kg (145.5 pounds) last summer.
Past ISU All-American David Bertolino will hit the mat at 84 kg (185 pounds) in the final tournament. Former Iowa Stater Grant Turner will compete in the freestyle qualification tournament at 84 kg (185 pounds).
Cyclones Ben Cash (60 kg/132.25 pounds) and Chris Spangler (74 kg/163 pounds) will wrestle Sunday in the ASICS FILA Junior Nationals.
The U.S. Open will be broadcast via tape delay on the Big Ten Network, with airings Sunday at 6 p.m., Tuesday at 9 a.m. and April 29 at 4 p.m.
