BOULDER, Colo. – Iowa State dug itself out of a big hole at Colorado but couldn't finish in overtime and fell 66-60 Saturday at the Coors Event Center. An ice-cold first half (7-31 from the field), a 1-of-6 effort from the free-throw line in overtime and deficit scoring in the lane dropped the No. 17 Cyclones to 13-4 overall and 1-2 in the Big 12 Conference. Colorado is 10-6, and 1-2.
The upset occurred despite a 26-point performance from Cyclone Kelsey Bolte. Her three-point shot with extra backspin clipped the rim and fell with 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 57-57 and send the contest to overtime, capping an Iowa State comeback. Iowa State had trailed 54-48 with 4:22 left in regulation and 57-51 with just 2:41 on the clock.
Cyclone center Anna Prins, who played just 24 minutes because of foul trouble, scored to give Iowa State a 59-57 lead with 4:22 remaining in overtime. But the Cyclones could not convert at the foul line in the extra period, after hitting all nine attempts at the line during regulation. Beyond Bolte, the rest of the Iowa Staters made just 11-of-48 shots from the field.
“In several games this season, when Kelsey Bolte had a good game, someone else stood up and had a good effort to support her,” Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly said. “Today that did not happen. We had opportunities but didn't take advantage of the chances we had with good looks, holding on to rebounds and at the free-throw line.”
Brittany Wilson led four Colorado players in double figures with a career-high 19 points. Colorado led 29-22 at the half and extended its lead to 40-27 on a layup by Wilson with 16:19 left in the second half. Iowa State battled back, going on a 12-2 run that included three-pointers by Kelsey Harris and Bolte to close the gap to 43-41 with 12:14 left in the game.
Bolte moved into 10th place on the all-time ISU career scoring list with 1,368 points, passing Tracy Gahan.
