AMES, Iowa - Iowa State's men's track team claimed two titles and finished second in the team scoring of the Bill Bergan Invitational Saturday at the Lied Recreation Center. The Cyclone women won three individual crowns and placed second as a team. Minnesota won the men's competition with 180 points. Iowa State had 64 points. Missouri won the women's team title with 125.50 points. Iowa State was second with 93.83 points.
"We had some good performances," Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said. "I thought we were a little sluggish as a whole, but a lot of that is about where we are in the season and what workouts we are doing as a team. I think another 10 days of workouts and then we will be getting ready for the conference meet."
Ian Warner won the 60-meter dash in 6.75 seconds. Teammate Amara Sama was second in a personal best 6.80. Warner and Sama also hooked up for a 1-2 finish in the 200 meters. Both set personal bests in the 200-meter indoors with clockings of 21.73 and 21.77, respectively.
"I thought Ian and Amara did a good job for us," Ihmels. "It was good to see Ian come back from a poor prelim to run like he did in the final."
Warner concurred.
"I ran the worst race of my college career in the (60-meter) prelims, so it feels great to come back and win the final," Warner said.
Cyclone Alex Dillenbeck took second in the mile in a personal best 4:10.40. Rico Loy took third in the 800-meter run and Cyclone Derek Alderks was third in the high jump.
In women's competition, Kianna Elahi won the 400-meters in 55.06. Laishema Hampton won the weight throw with an effort of 61-11 ½. Another winner was Cyclone Betsy Saina, who took the 3,000-meters in 9:22.65. Iowa State's Dani Stack was second, with a time of 9:25.04, a personal best of nearly 30 seconds.
"I was happy with how I ran today," Saina said. "I have goals for later in the season and the way I ran today I feel good about reaching those goals now.
Ihmels was clearly pleased with the progress of Stack.
"She was a real bright spot today," Ihmels said. "To PR by almost 30 seconds demonstrates the progress we have been seeing from her in the workouts. Laishema demonstrated consistency and we appreciate that about her performances."
Cyclone Britta Christofferson was third in the weight throw with a best of 57-11 ¼. Kersten Thorgaard was third in the 800-meter run. In the mile, Iowa State's India Lee was second in 4:58.70.
Iowa State's Alison Tedrow and Hannah Willms tied for second in the high jump after clearing 5-7.
Cyclone track and field is back in action Feb. 4-5 as they head to Nebraska for the Husker Invitational.
