MASON CITY, Iowa - Cyclone wrestlers competed at the Kaye Young Open Saturday and eight finished in the top six of their weight division. Redshirt junior Matt Gibson, freshman Logan Molina and redshirt freshmen Joe Cozart and Quinn Wilson each brought home titles.
Molina won the 165-pound division on a 20-9 major decision over Joe Yoder. Gibson pinned Ellsworth Community College's Arthur O'Neill in the heavyweight championship. Wilson's 5-3 decision over Waldorf College's Josh Calteux earned him the 174-pound crown.
Cozart tore through the 149-pound bracket, opening up his run to the title with two tech falls before wrapping up the title with convincing wins 9-2 over top-seeded Isaiah Tatum of Grand View and a 10-6 decision over Iowa State freshman Lucas Swalla, who was competing unattached. Swalla made it to the finals with a 5-4 win over Gibson Metellus of NIACC.
Freshman 125-pounder Chase Flack and freshman 141-pounder Matt White both competed unattached for the Cyclones and finished second in their divisions. Redshirt freshman RJ Hallman also took away a second place finish at 133 pounds.
Molina, Swalla, Flack and White are set to gain experience for Iowa state with plans to redshirt during the 2011-12 season.
Team scores were not kept at the meet and participating schools included NIACC, Ellsworth CC, Grand View, William Penn University, Iowa State Club, Lincoln College and Waldorf College.
