SESSION I FINAL BRACKET
EVANSTON, Ill. - Four Iowa State wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2011 Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Thursday. Two Cyclones posted major upsets in the first session of the tournament.
Redshirt freshman
Luke Goettl beat Zack Kemmerer of Penn, the second seed and No. 2 wrestler in the country at 141 pounds. Goettl topped the All-American in a 5-3 decision after a takedown in the final 30 seconds to extend his lead and secure the win. Goettl entered the tournament on a positive note after posting his first dual victory of the season against Missouri's Brandon Wiest Dec. 18 on the road.
"Goettl's health is what allowed him to compete at the level needed to win against an All-American," Iowa State head coach
Kevin Jackson said.
Unattached for the Cyclones, true freshman
Tanner Weatherman stunned Rutgers' redshirt junior Greg Zanetti, the No. 4 seed of the tournament. Weatherman defeated the nation's 10th-ranked wrestler in an 8-6 decision to advance to the quarterfinals. With three Cyclone matches happening simultaneously, Jackson glanced over to Weatherman's match near the end and his excitement was evident. Jackson jumped straight up from his chair after Weatherman's final takedown secured the victory.
The No. 1 seed at 174 pounds
Chris Spangler will face Luke Rynish of University Wisconsin-Parkside in the quarterfinals Thursday night after posted victories by decision over his first two opponents of the tournament. Spangler is ranked sixth nationally and grew up attending Midlands Championships as a native of Naperville, Ill.
Redshirt senior
Andrew Sorenson continues to demonstrate Jackson's meaning of Iowa State wrestling. The Cyclone captain pinned both of his opponents en route to a quarterfinal berth.
Cole Shafer posted a major decision in the second round of the consolation bracket at 197 pounds and will compete in session II against No. 10 seed Nick Vetterlein of Virginia Tech.
