SESSION II FINAL BRACKET
EVANSTON, Ill. - After the first two sessions of the 2011 Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., the No. 15 Iowa State wrestling team is tied for seventh place overall. Two Cyclones will be competing in the semifinals include fourth-seeded
Andrew Sorenson and redshirt freshman
Luke Goettl.
In Sorenson's 165-pound quarterfinal match against fifth-seeded Bekzod Abdurakhmonov of Clarion, Sorenson posted a takedown and two escapes for a 4-3 lead in the final period. With only six ticks left on the clock, Sorenson went for a shot to score a takedown in the final two seconds to win by an even larger margin. The Woden, Iowa native demonstrated Iowa State head coach
Kevin Jackson's philosophy of going for every point possible in both sessions of the Midlands Championships.
At 141 pounds, Goettl started his day off with a pin at 2:59 over Nick Lawrence of Purdue. Goettl then went on to stun second-seeded and second-ranked Zack Kemmerer of Penn in the Championship Round of 16 for a quarterfinal berth.
In the quarterfinals, Goettl continued to shock the wrestling faithful inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Clarkdale, Ariz., native posted two takedowns before pinning the No. 10 seed Billy Ashnault of Rutgers for a trip to the semifinals. Goettl had near-fall points locked up with one minute remaining, but pushed for the fall to garner bonus points.
Competing unattached for Iowa State,
Tanner Weatherman lost a tight quarterfinal match to No. 5 Lee Munster of Northwestern in a 3-1 decision, but will continue to compete Friday in the wrestlebacks. Also competing in the consolation bracket will be Cyclone
Mikey England who pinned Brandon Lingtner of Rider in the fourth consolation round at 3:30.
Redshirt junior
Matt Gibson also remains in competition on the consolation side after a 6-2 decision of Atticus Disney of Cal Poly in the fourth consolation round.
