SESSION III FINAL BRACKET
EVANSTON, Ill. - Heading into the final session of the 2011 Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, the No. 15 Iowa State wrestling team holds a seventh-place spot in the team standings. Three Cyclones will be competing for fifth place in the final session, along with heavyweight
Matt Gibson competing for a third-place finish.
Redshirt junior Gibson topped sixth-ranked Peter Sturgeon of Central Michigan Friday in a 7-2 decision in the fifth consolation round. In the consolation quarterfinals, Gibson topped Roger Vukobratovich of Purdue by major decision 13-3.
"I think Gibson finally wrestled to his potential," Iowa State head coach
Kevin Jackson said. "If he competes his hardest he's going to win a lot of matches."
Gibson garnered his second upset of the day with a 10-9 victory over fourth-seeded John Helgerson, unattached for Wartburg. Gibson is set to face Mike McMullan of Northwestern, the 10th seed of the tournament.
At 174 pounds, Cyclone teammates faced off in the consolation quarterfinals as
Mikey England and
Tanner Weatherman battled it out for a consolation semifinal berth. Weatherman defeated England 9-7, but fell to Jordan Blaton of Illinois 15-7. Unattached for the Cyclones, Weatherman matches up with ninth-seeded Luke Rynish of University Wisconsin-Parkside in the fifth place final Friday evening.
Redshirt freshman
Luke Goettl was the only unseeded wrestler in the semifinals and will face Bebeto Yewah of University Wisconsin-LaCrosse in a fifth-place battle after losing to Zach Neibert of Virginia Tech, 9-8.
"I'm happy with how the young guys [Goettl and Weatherman] competed and I think we have some really good kids with really bright futures," Jackson said.
Cyclone captain
Andrew Sorenson will also be in contention for a fifth-place finish in session IV. The Woden, Iowa native lost a close 8-4 decision to Wisconsin's Ben Jordan in the consolation semifinals.
England placed eighth overall in the tournament after a tight battle with sixth-seeded Jimmy Sheptock of Maryland.
The final session of competition begins Friday night at 7 p.m. (CST).
