CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Members of the Iowa State wrestling team competed in the UNI Open Saturday in Cedar Falls and two Cyclones captured titles at the tournament. Logan Molina competed unattached for Iowa State and earned his title at 165 pounds. At 174 pounds, Michael England claimed his title after facing unattached teammate Tanner Weatherman in the championship round.
Molina started the day with a 7-4 decision over C.J. Navarro who competed unattached for Iowa Central. Molina then captured victories over Kyle Lux, unattached for UNI, and Austin Lindsay, unattached for South Dakota. In the championship round, Molina topped Minnesota State's Cody Quinn by a 6-4 decision.
England opened the tournament with a 5-3 victory over Scott Liegel of Wisconsin (unattached) and followed up with a 4-1 decision over Minnesota State's Brandon Eichmann. England also defeated Iowa's Walt Gilmor in an 8-4 decision in the semifinal round. The Centerville, Iowa native then edged past Weatherman in the finals with a 5-4 decision.
On his way to a runner-up finish, Weatherman defeated his first opponent in a 16-3 major decision and posted a technical fall against Upper Iowa's Wade Gobib. Redshirt freshman Quinn Wilson also competed in the 174 division and finished second in the consolation bracket. Wilson defeated two opponents by major decision and pinned Gilmor in the semifinal consolation round.
Four Iowa Staters competed in the 133-pound bracket. Brandon Jones competed unattached for Iowa State and had two major decisions in the UNI Open. Jones topped Panther wrestler Ryan Jauch in a 6-4 decision for the fifth-place finish in the consolation bracket.
Iowa State's next dual opponent is No. 3 Minnesota. The Cyclones travel to Minneapolis, Minn., Friday for the meet which is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. (CST).
