Cyclones Capture Seven Titles at Holiday Preview

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field teams started the 2011-12 indoor season off with a strong showing in the annual Holiday Preview meet Friday inside the Lied Recreation Center. The Cyclones concluded the day with seven individual champions and 19 personal-best marks.

Cyclone freshman Christina Hillman set a Holiday Preview meet record in the shot put as part of her collegiate debut. The seven-time Delaware state champion threw 53-11.25 to capture her first collegiate title.

Iowa State senior Kianna Elahi also set a new Holiday Preview record en route to capturing the 300 meter title. Elahi surpassed the previous meet record which was held by Krystal Tourtman, who competed in the meet unattached.

The Cyclone men dominated the high jump field, sweeping four of the top five spots. Derek Alderks took the top spot with teammates Cameron Ostrowski and Troy Walls placing second and third, respectively. All three Cyclones posted a mark of 6-10.25.

Iowa State also dominated the women's 600 yard run field, placing four Cyclones in the race's top-five. Redshirt freshman Krista Shoeman took home the event's title, posting a time of 1:25.12. Teammates Donnise Powell, Dana Christensen and Casie Christensen finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

The multi-event group produced a strong finish in their first meet of the season. The Cyclone women swept places two through four in the pentathlon, while Taylor Sanderson was the men's pentathlon runner-up, competing unattached.

Redshirt freshman Kyle Zankowski earned the Holiday Preview title in the mile run in a personal-best 4:16.32. Teammates Kyle Donnelly and Brandon Barnes finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Competing unattached, redshirt junior Laishema Hampton defended her Holiday Preview weight throw title, throwing a personal-best 67-04.75. The Cyclone women swept the first three places of the weight throw as Danielle Frere took second, competing unattached and Hayli Bozarth took third.

Relay action concluded the meet for the Cyclones as the women's 4x300-meter relay team took home the Holiday Preview title.

The Cyclones compete next at the ISU Open January 20-21 at the Lied Recreation Center.
