Hampton Breaks School Weight Throw Record at ISU Classic

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State junior Laishema Hampton shattered the school record in the weight throw, highlighting competition for the Cyclones at day two of the ISU Classic Friday at the Lied Recreation Center. Hampton threw a personal best 65-04.25, bettering the mark set in 2003 by Susan Sherman (63-11.75) by nearly a foot and a half, while placing second overall in the seeded weight-throw event.

"The competition at the Husker Invitational last weekend put me in a good mindset for this weekend," Hampton said. "This is something I have been working towards throughout the indoor season and it puts me in a good spot going into the Big 12 Conference meet in two weeks. Competing at home and having the whole team here is also another thing that motivates me to compete hard."

Hampton's mark ranks her second in the Big 12 and would rank her 12th nationally heading into the weekend.

"Anytime a school record is broken, it says something," Iowa State throws coach Grant Wall said. "Records are tough to break, especially at Iowa State. She has been working hard while not worrying about hitting a specific mark and that's when the strong marks happen. But I think she has it in her to throw a bit further to qualify for the NCAA meet in March."

The men's competition was highlighted by a second-place finish in the unseeded men's high jump as Derek Alderks tied his personal best mark jumping 6-07.

The final day of the ISU Classic begins Saturday at 9 a.m. with the women's non-seeded mile run. Field events are scheduled for a 10 a.m. start with the women's non-seeded shot put. Live results are available. Results will be posted on cyclones.com at the conclusion of the meet.
