AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field teams will head toward the climax of the season, the 2011 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at the Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. Multi-event competition will kick off the action on both days, starting at 10:30 a.m. CST on Friday and 10 a.m. CST on Saturday.
“Everything has built up to this coming weekend,” Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said. “We've made great progress in the last couple weeks. We're going to have to have a big day on Friday to gain some momentum for Saturday. But, I think we can make some improvements on both sides from last year.”
The women, who are currently ranked 35th nationally, will face tough competition from six teams ranked in the nation's top-25. Iowa State is led in the distance races by junior Betsy Saina, who is ranked fourth nationally in the 5,000-meter run and has already earned a bid to the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. The Cyclone sprinters are led by junior Kianna Elahi. Elahi enters the weekend ranked first in the Big 12 in the 600-yard run after breaking the school record in the event at the ISU Classic Feb. 12.
In the field, the Iowa State women are led by junior Laishema Hampton, who also set a new school record at the ISU Classic in the weight throw. Hampton currently ranks second in the Big 12 in the event. Freshman Hannah Willms leads the jumpers as she enters the championship weekend ranked eighth nationally in the high jump and is tied for first in the conference.
“I think we've seen improvement throughout the team,” Ihmels said. “Each group has done a really good job of getting better every week.”
The Cyclone men will face stiff competition, as six of the 12 conference teams are ranked in the top-25 nationally. Iowa State is led by senior three-time All-American Hillary Bor, while the sprinters are led by junior Ian Warner. Warner currently ranks in the Big 12's top-20 in both the 60 and 200-meter dashes.
“We return Hillary Bor who was a conference champion last year in the mile,” Ihmels said. “He's got a tough task to win another championship. It seems like as we get better, the conference gets better too, but that's the case with any sport in our conference.”
In the field the men are led by redshirt senior thrower Josh Koglin, who currently is third in the Big 12 in the weight throw.
“(The Devaney Center) is a great environment for track and field,” Ihmels said. “We raced at the Husker Invite (Feb. 4-5) so most of our squad is familiar with it. I think it can be a bit tricky in certain events. It's a little different, but at the end of the day we just have to do what we've done all year long.”
Results will be posted on cyclones.com at the conclusion of each day's events.
