LINCOLN, Neb. – The end of day one of the 2011 Big 12 Track and Field Championships inside the Devaney Center proved to be the most exciting portion of Friday's competition for the Iowa State track and field teams, as the women saw five athletes and the distance medley relay team on the awards podium, while the men had one athlete and the distance medley relay team earn all-conference honors and a trip to the podium.
The Iowa State women recorded 32 points and currently sit in third, while the men earned 11 points and end day one in seventh place.
"I think the women had a great day," Iowa State head coach
Corey Ihmels said. "The throwers had a tremendous day. They're always fun to watch so it's good to see them get on the podium. This is the second consecutive year we've won the women's 5,000-meter run and Betsy worked hard to earn that title tonight."
Saina, a two-time All-American, earned All-Big 12 honors as she ran to victory in the 5,000-meter run, with teammate
Dani Stack not far behind in fifth. The Cyclone women earned 14 points from the duo.
"The race felt really good," Saina said. "It makes me confident going into the 3,000-meter race tomorrow."
Also on the podium were Iowa State throwers
Laishema Hampton,
Britta Christofferson and
Danielle Frere as they took second, fourth and eighth, respectively, in the weight throw competition.
The women's distance medley relay team clocked a fifth-place finish, adding four points to the team's day one total. The team's time of 11:30.27 was a team best-mark by nearly eight seconds and now ranks third on Iowa State's indoor all-time performance list. The men's distance medley relay team also earned a fourth-place finish with a 9:51.54.
Redshirt senior Josh Koglin was the only individual Cyclone to put points on the board for the men's squad, as he took third-place in the weight throw. Koglin threw a personal best 63-06.75 and earned six team points for the Iowa State men. The mark moves Koglin into third on the Cyclone men's indoor all-time performer list.
Five Cyclones qualified for finals on Saturday in four events.
Nebraska leads the women's team competition with 37 points. Oklahoma holds the first-place position on the men's side after day one with 40 points.
The 2011 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships continue Saturday with multi-event competition beginning at 11 a.m. CST.
