SENIOR RECOGNITION CEREMONYAMES, Iowa - Iowa State's
Kelsey Bolte went out a winner Tuesday night at Hilton Coliseum. Bolte, playing in her final home game, led the Cyclones with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals as Iowa State engineered a 27-4 run over a 10-minute period of the second half to bury Kansas in a 72-36 rout. The victory put Iowa State in sole possession of fourth place in the Big 12 Conference with 21-8 overall record and a 9-6 league mark. Kansas falls to 19-10 overall and 6-9 in the conference. Iowa State closes out the regular season with a game at Missouri Saturday at 4 p.m. CST.
The 36 points allowed to Kansas were the fewest-ever by an Iowa State team in Big 12 play. The previous low was 37 against Kansas in 2005 and Texas Tech in 2000.
Bolte ended the evening by being honored as Iowa State's lone senior player after the game. The crowd of 10,333 stayed in its entirety after the game to give Bolte her due. The Cyclone is the seventh-leading scorer in school history with 1,591 points.
Iowa State led 30-27 before starting on its run with 10 straight points, the final three on a trey by
Amanda Zimmerman with 13:03 left to a 40-27 advantage. Zimmerman continued to burn Kansas, making another basket, getting fouled for a three-point play, rebounding her own miss for a bucket and then another three from the top of the key to give the Cyclones a 50-29 lead with 9:34 to go. Bolte was ever present, earning assists on three straight trips down the floor during a one-minute span with less than seven minutes left.
The Cyclones held Kansas' leading scorer Carolyn Davis to a season-low six points after she scored 36 Saturday at Nebraska. Davis had been averaging over 23 points over the last seven games, which included three times scoring 30 or more. The loss ended a three-game win streak for the Jayhawks, who were led by Monica Engelman with 13 points. KU had shot better than 50 percent from the field in its last eight games, but were held to 29.6 percent by Iowa State.
Bolte came out shooting. She made her first jumper just 20 seconds into the game and then another to propel the Cyclones to an early lead. When
Jessica Schroll drove the lane for a layup it was 11-5 with 14:30 left in the first half. A Bolte three gave the Cyclones a 14-7 advantage at the 13:03 mark and another one with 9:51 to go made it 17-9. Iowa State's biggest first-half lead was at 21-12 before Kansas made a 6-0 spurt. The Cyclones held on for a 25-20 halftime advantage as neither team made a shot from the field in the final 3:41.
Schroll finished with a career-high four blocks and Poppens was in double-figures with 13 points.
The Cyclones finished the home portion of their schedule 16-1, marking the ninth time in 16 seasons under head coach
Bill Fennelly in which they've lost one game or less at Hilton Coliseum.
