Frere Hits Mark, Waits for NCAA Field Bid

AMES, Iowa - Junior Danielle Frere led the Iowa State track and field team Saturday at the NCAA Qualifier inside the Lied Recreation Center as she took fourth place in the shot put with a personal best mark of 54-05.25. Frere's mark was one foot short of the NCAA automatic qualifying mark, but she may still receive an at-large bid to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The NCAA field will be announced Sunday night.

Throughou the meet, Iowa State track and field athletes set 17 personal records. Athletes used the last chance meet as a final attempt to make qualifying marks for the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships March 11-12 in College Station, Texas.

Junior Laishema Hampton finished second in the weight throw. Her mark of 65-02.75 was short of the Division I automatic qualifying mark of 68-10.25.Entering the weekend Hampton is 18th in the NCAA Division I performance list.

Freshman Hannah Willms took second in the high jump with a mark of 5-09.25. After passing at two heights Willms missed all three attempts at 6-00.75, the NCAA Division I automatic qualifying mark. The Dike-New Hartford product currently ranks 11th nationally.

The NCAA is scheduled to annouce the Division-I championship field Sunday night on ncaa.com.
