AMES, Iowa - Iowa State placed six student-athletes on the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Tennis Teams, the league announced Monday. Forty-five women's tennis student-athletes were recognized between the Big 12 schools. Iowa State and Nebraska lead the conference with six student-athletes named each.
Iowa State juniors Marie-Christine Chartier, Tessa Lang and Maria Fernanda Macedo received first-team honors for the second consecutive year.
Seniors Erin Karonis and Reka Kelemen were also awarded first team standings. Karonis, a journalism major, has earned the recognition three times in her career as a Cyclone. Kelemen, a first-time honoree, is a bioinformatics and computational biology major.
The sixth Cyclone student-athlete that earned the accolades is Liza Wischer. The senior communications major earned second-team honors for the second time in her career.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.00 GPA either cumulative or over the two previous semesters. Qualifiers must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests, and freshman and transfers are not eligible during their first year of residence.
