NORMAN, Okla. – The Iowa State track teams got personal best performances from
Jordon Andreassen in the heptathon and
Derek Alderks in the men's high jump on the second dayt the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships inside the John Jacobs Track Complex after five Cyclones qualified for Sunday's final races. The Cyclone women are in fourth-place after two days with 27 points. Nebraska currently leads the women's team competition with 62 points. The Iowa State men rest in eleventh-place with nine points heading into the final day of events. Texas leads the men's team race with 54 points.
"Jordon did a great job today," Iowa State head coach
Corey Ihmels said. "She went to North Polk (Alleman) High School and was one of those Iowa kids who was a standout in several sports. We have a young group of multi-event competitors who didn't score today but will be a factor in the near future."
Andreassen earned six team points for the Iowa State women after earning third in the heptathlon. En route to her third-place finish, Andreassen posted personal best marks in five of the seven events, and also recorded a personal best number of total points in the multi-event competition (5,233). The mark currently ranks third on Iowa State's outdoor track and field all-time performer list.
"I'm so happy, I could cry," Andreassen said. "I had personal bests in everything but the high jump and the 800 meter run. After finishing 10th indoors (in the pentathlon), I am third outdoors. I feel good, really good."
The men earned a team point from Alderks in the high jump, as he took eighth in the event, posting a personal best mark of 6 feet, 9 inches.
"Jumping 6-09 was a personal best and I was consistent," Alderks said. "There was a wind that sometimes was at your back and was sometimes a crosswind. I would stand there and watch the 30 second clock, waiting for the right time, because the wind would push you into the bar. I'm looking forward to next year."
Iowa State assistant coach
Pete Herber is happy with Alderks' performance.
"The wind made it more challenging, but (Derek) managed it well and got us a point," Herber said.
Ian Warner recorded a personal-best time of 10.50 against a slight headwind in the 100-meter dash to qualify for Sunday's final. Warner will compete in the event Sunday at 7:35 p.m. CDT. Iowa State's
Edward Kemboi secured a place in the 800-meter final Sunday at 7:55 p.m. CDT, after running a personal best 1:49.58 in the preliminaries.
"Edward is just 17 years old," Ihmels said. "He is a freshman who will be in the mix Sunday."
For the Iowa State women,
Lucy Kennedy earned a spot in the women's 1500-meter final Sunday at 6:20 p.m. CDT.
Kianna Elahi and
Donnise Powell both earned qualifying spots in the 400-meter hurdles after placing fifth and eighth, respectively, in the event's preliminary round. The 400-meter hurdles final is scheduled for Sunday night at 8:10.
It was sunny, with breezy conditions in Norman Saturday with temperatures in the 60s, a far cry from some of the previous blazing hot temperatures experienced here at conference meets.
The final day of the Big 12 Track and Field Championships begins Sunday at 1 p.m. with the women's high jump.
