WATERLOO, Iowa - Iowa State golfer Kristin Paulson successfully defended her title at the 2011 Iowa Women's Amateur at the Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo, Iowa this afternoon. And she did it in record-setting fashion.
The senior-to-be broke the 54-hole scoring mark at the tournament with a 14-under par 202, five strokes better than the old record set by Jenny Arsenault in 2004. She fired a 70 this afternoon to win her second-straight Iowa Women's Amateur title by a whopping 10 strokes over former Cyclone Lisa Meshke (212).
A native of Ottumwa, Iowa, Paulson skyrocketed into the lead after the second round when she carded an Iowa Women's Amateur-record 63. Birdies on the final six holes helped Paulson eclipse the old mark of 65 set by Arsenault in 2005. She continued her torrid pace at the start of the third round today, going 5-under through the first four holes. She was 11-under par during a 10-hole stretch with nine birdies and one eagle.
Iowa State golfers Beth Wagner (214- T3rd), Katie Suckow (225- T9th) and Katelynn Hogenson (230- 14th) also competed this week. Wagner, a native of Ankeny, who will be a freshman for the Cyclones next year, shot a third-round-low 67 this afternoon to help her tie for third.
An Iowa State golfer has won four of the last five Iowa Women's Amateur Championships (2007- Kendra Hanson, 2008-Pennapa Pulsawath, 2010-Kristin Paulson, 2011-Kristin Paulson).
