NEW ORLEANS - Six Iowa State female student-athletes and one Cyclone male student-athlete were named to the Division I All-Academic Track and Field team, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Thursday. A record total of 663 student-athletes were named to the women's 2011 Division I All-Academic Track and Field team, while a total of 420 men's athletes earned the honors.
Throwers Britta Christofferson and Danielle Frere earned honors, Lucy Kennedy and Meaghan Nelson represented the distance group, while sprinters Kianna Elahi and Donnise Powell were also named to the Division I team.
Hillary Bor, a four-time All-American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, was the lone Cyclone male to earn All-Academic honors in 2011. Bor and Elahi both earned Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA earlier in the year.
The Big 12 Conference had 95 women and 45 men earn All-Academic honors, leading the conference race by a large margin on both sides.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field team, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either one of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top-96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top-48 in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
