AMES, Iowa - Just four spots separate No. 19 Iowa State and No. 15 Virginia Tech in this week's Intermat rankings. The Cyclones (1-9, 0-4 Big 12) aim to beat the Hokies (3-2, 1-1 ACC) at 7 p.m. CST Friday in Hilton Coliseum.
"They are a strong and solid team with a lot of depth," Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson said. "They are going to be looking for a little revenge after last year."
Iowa State opened last season with a 17-16 victory over the Hokies in which the Cyclones staged a comeback after trailing 10-0 after the first three matches. This season Iowa State enters with four wrestlers ranked in the top-20 of his weight division compared to Virginia Tech's three.
After a championship title at the William Penn Open Saturday, Iowa State 133-pounder Ben Cash is in contention for the starting spot. Either Cash or redshirt freshman RJ Hallman will take on the nation's No.1-ranked wrestler Devin Carter.
"We're looking for Ben or RJ to step up and wrestle to his full ability," Jackson said. "We would love to get Ben out there because we have had RJ wrestle some tough matches. We're excited to see if Ben is ready to handle that level of wrestling."
At 141 pounds, Luke Goettl will be seeking personal revenge against No. 11 Zach Neibert, who ousted Goettl in the consolation semifinals at the Midlands Championships Dec. 30.
Redshirt sophomore Cole Shafer has also been exposed to his Hokie opponent when the two faced off in Evanston, Ill. Shafer topped Nick Vetterlein 10-2 in what Jackson referred to as the best match Shafer has wrestled while at Iowa State.
In a top-10 matchup, No. 5 Andrew Sorenson will square off against Virginia Tech's seventh-ranked Pete Yates at 165 pounds. Yates enters the dual after a runner-up finish at Midlands, while Sorenson is coming off two technical falls in the past two Cyclone meets.
