Langhorst, Cassens Lead Cyclones On Day One

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Iowa State tennis team finished the first day of the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational tournament with eight overall wins this afternoon.
"Having not played competitively since November and getting positive results was good," Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa said. "We just need to keep adapting to this tournament's circumstances, like playing outside with wind."
Cyclone duo Jenna Langhorst and Meghan Cassens had perfect days, defeating Florida Gulf Coast's Morgan Betchel and Gyanna Mandic 9-8 (4) as a pair. Cassens defeated Natasha Phillips of Florida Atlantic in two quick singles sets, 6-0, 6-3, and Langhorst also won her match, ousting FGCU's Bettina Botha, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-5.
Other Cyclones that won to advance in their singles brackets were Simona Cacciuttolo, Marie-Christine Chartier, and Emma Waites.
Though both Maria Macedo and Ksenia Pronina fell in their individual matches, the pair overtook North Texas' Valentina Starkova and Barbora Vykydalova 8-6 in their first doubles contest. The senior-freshman team will take on Anna Bartenstein and Gabriela Meja of the Miami (Fla.) Sunday. In Round Robin doubles, Emma Waites and Marie-Christine Chartier brought down Northwestern State's Olga Leyshyna and Dana Sardak 8-5.
"We played good competition against a lot of teams today," Espinosa said. "If we can manage what happens on both sides of the court, that's what's going to help us in this tournament."
Day two of the tournament will kick off Sunday morning at the Florida Gulf Coast Tennis Center, finishing with the championship matches being played Monday.
