Cyclones Add Five Titles On Final Day Of ISU Open

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field teams concluded the final day of the ISU Open with five event titles and a meet record broken by a member of the Cyclone squad.

Iowa State senior Kianna Elahi clocked a 1:21.05 to win the 600-yard run, breaking the ISU Open record in the event. This marks the second straight meet where Elahi has broken a meet record. The Cyclones also had women finish fourth, seventh and ninth, collecting four of the top-10 spots in the event.

Iowa State's women's throwers dominated the shot put field, claiming the top four spots in the event. Competing unattached, Danielle Frere won the ISU Open shot put for the second straight year. Both years she won the event with a mark of 52-01.25. Frere was followed by teammates Hayli Bozarth, Christina Hillman, Laishema Hampton, in that order.

Competing for the first time since the cross country season, the Cyclones' distance squad claimed seven out of the top 10 places in women's mile run. Four-time All-American Betsy Saina ran a personal best time of 4:43.18 to win the event. Teammates Dani Stack, Katy Moen and Sam Bluske finished second through fourth, respectively.

The Cyclones came out strong in the 1,000-meter races as Maggie Gannon claimed the title for the women and Edward Kemboi, competing unattached, took the title in the men's race. The Cyclone men claimed seven of the top-10 places in the event.

The Cyclone men also dominated the competition in the mile run by placing five of their competitors in the top-10. Competing unattached, freshman Cullen Wannarka was the events runner-up followed closely by teammate Brian Llamas, who was also competing unattached.

After finishing second in the preliminary rounds of the 60-meter dash, senior Ian Warner ran to a third place finish in the events final round with a time of 6.74.

Cyclone track and field is back in action next weekend as they host the third annual Bill Bergan Invitational Thursday through Saturday in the Lied Rec Center.
