CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The Iowa State softball team (2-8, 0-0 Big 12) fell twice on Thursday, dropping a 3-0 no-hit decision to Fresno State (8-2, 0-0 WAC) and a close 5-4 decision to Oregon State (8-3, 0-0 Pac-12), extending its losing streak to seven games.
After not recording a hit against Fresno State, the Cyclones erupted for 10 hits against Oregon State but just short of the Beavers who plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Along with the Cyclones' 10-hit team performance against Oregon State, sophomore infielder Sara Davison, who entered the game hitting .091, was 2-for-3 against the Beavers and drove in Iowa State's first two runs of the game. Tori Torrescano and Anna Cole also picked up two hits in the second game of the day.
Although the losing pitcher of record in both games, Torrescano (2-4) allowed just three runs in eight innings of work on Thursday. The junior started against Fresno State and pitched 2.2 innings of relief against Oregon State.
The Cyclones ran into an offensive wall against the Bulldogs as Michelle Moses (4-2) threw the first no-hitter against Iowa State this season, facing just two batters over the minimum and walking three. Torrescano, who walked twice, was the first out of a double play after her leadoff walk in the second inning.
Moses got the scoring started for the Bulldogs in the top of the sixth, hitting a home run to lead off the frame. Through Thursday's game with Iowa State, Moses had five hits this season, all home runs. Two batters later, Michelle Solomon hit a solo home run off Torrescano and Vonnie Martin capped the inning with a home run off reliever Miranda Kemp to put the Bulldogs up, 3-0.
Torrescano threw 5.1 innings allowing six Bulldog hits and two earned runs, the fewest runs she had allowed since pitching against Green Bay on Feb. 12. Torrescano walked one and fanned five in the outing.
Pitching was strong again for the Cyclones against Oregon State as Iowa State freshman Madison Jones threw 2.2 innings giving up two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out one. After Miranda Kemp allowed two more runs to score in the bottom of the fourth, Torrescano (2-4) entered the circle for the final 2.2 innings, absorbing her second loss of the day while giving up three hits, all in the final frame, and the winning run.
With Oregon State leading 4-0 at the top of the fifth, Davison got the offense going for Iowa State, driving home two runs with a two-out double to cut the lead in half. The Cyclones completed the comeback in the sixth with an RBI double by Jorden Smith who scored on a groundout by pinch hitter Amandine Habben.
It was the Beavers' Lea Cavestany who came through in the bottom of the seventh, driving in the winning run with a one-out single and scoring Elizabeth Santana who singled to start the inning.
On Friday, the Cyclones play Colorado State at noon and Pacific at 5 p.m. Both times central.
